Chapter Fifteen
THE DOOR FLEW OPEN and Ivy was hugging Mason before we blinked. “I’m so worried,” she cried. “Have you heard from him?” she asked, finally releasing Mason so he could breathe.
Mason motioned for us to go inside the diner since a cold breeze blew outside. I gladly accepted. It was going to be a long day and my feet already hurt. We took our coats off and hung them on the rack in her office.
“Let’s stay in here. The diner is open and I want to talk in private,” she said as she shut her door.
Mason and I took a seat opposite her desk. It was only six o’clock, but we wanted to have time to talk to Ivy, grab some breakfast, and be at the hospital by shortly after seven so we didn’t miss anything important.
“I spoke to the nurse this morning. Pops slept fine and is awake already. He’s complaining that he can’t have any breakfast,” Mason answered.
Ivy laughed. “Sounds like the Stan Hadley I know,” she said, grinning. “You’ll keep me posted after the procedure today?”
He nodded. “You know I will. Hopefully he’s released later today. If he can’t stay alone I’ll stay with him. If that’s the case, can Mel stay with you for a few days?”
“No!” I jumped in, my feet keeping me from jumping up, but I cleared my throat and tried again when I noticed Ivy glanced sharply at me. “Sorry, but I mean, I don’t need anyone to stay with me. I don’t want to encroach on the newlyweds and it’s only for a few nights. It’s no big deal.”
Mason shook his head. “I disagree.”
“Ivy, tell him I’ll be fine. I’m not an invalid.”
“I never said you were an invalid,” he answered and Ivy rolled her eyes.
“Children, really,” she said, shaking her head.
Mason sat forward and clasped his hands in front of him. “Mel, why don’t you tell Ivy about your feet.”
“How about if I don’t and say I did,” I answered sternly, giving him the pursed lip look.
“You said your feet hurt yesterday,” Ivy answered, tapping on the desk.
“Oh they hurt alright,” Mason agreed. “She has two toes that are twice their normal size and she can’t even bend them without wincing. She doesn’t realize she does it, because she’s Wonder Woman when it comes to pain, but I see it.”
Ivy nodded with a frown on her face. “I noticed when she walked in she was being ginger with her steps.”
“I’m sitting right here,” I said sarcastically. “I can hear you.”
“Good, if you can hear me then tell us how many steps there are to get into our apartment.”
I rolled my eyes to the ceiling, simply so I had a few seconds to digest the our apartment part. “Too many, but I’ve never counted them.”
Ivy leaned forward. “What he’s saying is, if you fall down those stairs, or are in too much pain to get up them, no one is there to help you.”
“Gee, thanks for spelling it out for me.
